South Plains Food Bank and PlainsCapital Bank join forces
During the COVID-19 pandemic, more families needed help as people faced layoffs, and many children, who rely on school lunch programs for meals, have moved on. virtual learning. Inventory shortages at grocery stores have disrupted the South Plains food bank’s supply chain, and social distancing guidelines have dramatically reduced the number of volunteers who can contribute to the food bank. Knowing that SPFB staff were mission critical, PlainsCapital Bank asked if a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan could help.
SPFB applied for the loan and got approval. The funds were used to cover staff payroll and team overtime. The SPFB was also able to hire 20 additional temporary positions to increase the workforce. With more paid staff, SPFB was able to move its food application and donation processes online. This new system allowed people to seek help and obtain food within 48 hours of their request.
“93 cents of every dollar goes directly to our programs. We have no debt and we can only do this with partners like PlainsCapital Bank. They are part of our mission to fight hunger, ”said Dina Jeffries, CEO of South Plains Food Bank.
